The Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN) has expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the use of force against Gen Z protesters who took part in peaceful demonstrations across the country.
During the protests, 19 teenagers lost their lives, and hundreds were injured. IPPAN described these incidents as a “cruel and barbaric crackdown.” The association highlighted that its member enterprises have already produced over 3,000 MW of electricity, with an additional 5,000 MW under construction, contributing billions in taxes and royalties annually, and providing employment to millions of Nepalis. IPPAN said the excessive use of force against youth protesters has caused serious disappointment.
In its statement, IPPAN criticized state institutions for operating in the interest of a few individuals and said years of delays, corruption, malpractice, and mismanagement in development projects forced youths onto the streets. Recalling the 2006 people’s movement, IPPAN noted that 19 people also died during that 19-day struggle, leading to the fall of an autocratic king, and emphasized that the deaths of 19 teenagers under a democratic government are extremely regrettable.
IPPAN asserted that using lethal force against peaceful protesters demanding accountability, anti-corruption measures, and freedom of expression violates the constitution. “Even if there are unlawful activities, there are alternative control measures, and firing directly is completely unacceptable,” the association stated.
Three Key Demands to the Government:
-
Impartial and independent investigation of the incident
-
Adequate compensation for the families of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured
-
Proper attention to the legitimate demands raised by the protesters
IPPAN also expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The association appealed to all energy entrepreneurs to provide financial and material support for the treatment of the injured.
