In just one year since its establishment with a robust paid-up capital of NPR 1 billion, Nepal Development Public Limited (NDP) has emerged as a dynamic and visionary force in Nepal’s investment landscape. Far from being just another financial entity, NDP stands as a specialized public investment company formed under a joint initiative of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Industries, and the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) — a powerful coalition that reflects the private sector’s unified commitment to drive the nation’s economic transformation.

The company’s First Annual General Meeting (AGM) underscored its strategic mandate: to expand large-scale investments through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and mobilize capital from diverse sources — including the government, domestic and international funds, and non-governmental entities — with a focus on employment-generating and infrastructure-driven projects crucial for long-term growth and stability.

Strategic Vision for National Development

At the forefront of NDP’s leadership is Chairman Chandra Dhakal, who also serves as the President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce. In his address, Dhakal outlined NDP’s long-term vision of fostering a secure, impactful, and system-driven investment environment. He emphasized the need for robust internal systems, transparent governance, and comprehensive risk management frameworks to ensure organized and sustainable investments.

Speaking against the backdrop of a sluggish domestic economy, Dhakal called upon the government to create a more conducive environment for investment. He asserted that even amid challenges, strategic investments in large industries have the potential to reinvigorate Nepal’s economic engine, enhance production capacity, and create widespread employment opportunities — the foundation of national stability.

Diversified Investment Focus

NDP’s ambitious investment strategy targets high-impact sectors that are critical for Nepal’s economic modernization and diversification:

  • Core Infrastructure: Concentration on essential sectors such as hydropower and information technology.

  • High-Growth Sectors: Expansion in tourism and agriculture, the backbone of Nepal’s economy.

  • Enterprise Development: Investments in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to boost local production and employment in rural regions.

  • Urbanization Projects: Through subsidiaries NDP Venture and NDP Developer, the company is preparing to invest in urban infrastructure, housing, and PVC-related projects.

By spreading investments across these areas, NDP aims to reduce sectoral risks while maximizing its role in economic diversification and structural transformation.

Mobilizing the Power of the Nepali Diaspora

A key highlight of the AGM was the call for active participation of Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) in the company’s initiatives. Chairman Dhakal made a strong appeal to Nepalis worldwide to invest through NDP, stressing that their contributions could play a vital role in shaping Nepal’s future.

The NRN community, he noted, not only holds significant financial resources — often in foreign currencies — but also brings valuable international experience, technological know-how, and management skills. Through NDP’s secure, transparent, and professionally managed investment platform, the company seeks to become the preferred investment partner for NRNs wishing to contribute to Nepal’s development while minimizing risk and maximizing impact.

Foundation of Strength and Broad Shareholder Base

The creation of NDP marked a historic step toward consolidating private capital into a unified national investment vehicle. The company’s strength lies in both its solid capital foundation and its diverse shareholder base.

Currently, NDP boasts 246 shareholders across 46 districts of Nepal — ranging from small entrepreneurs to large business leaders and NRNs — a clear reflection of the growing trust and enthusiasm for a homegrown investment institution driven by national priorities.

In line with this, NDP has prioritized the development of systematic investment frameworks and robust risk management mechanisms to maintain investor confidence, particularly in today’s fragile economic climate.
