Rupa Rural Municipality is promoting commercial garlic and onion farming by providing financial support to local farmers. This year, the municipality aims to produce 175,000 kilograms of garlic and onions.
According to Chairperson Navaraj Ojha, following a successful pilot cultivation last year, the municipality is encouraging farmers to engage in large-scale garlic and onion farming. Currently, approximately 400 ropani of land across all seven wards is being used for this purpose.
Key cultivation areas include Syastri, Dargamatar, Polyangtar, Tagedanda, Khalte, Deurali, Deurali Phedi, Chisapani, and riverside locations. The municipality provides NPR 10,000 per ropani for garlic and NPR 8,000 per ropani for onions as a grant to farmers.
In addition, the municipality is also supporting ginger farming, offering seeds and guidance to farmers. Currently, around 250 ropani is under ginger cultivation, with an estimated production of 80,000 kilograms this year.
Chairperson Ojha highlighted that commercial farming is attracting youth to agriculture, with over 100 young people engaged in these initiatives. He emphasized that the municipality is focusing on self-employment and income generation through commercial farming.
This initiative by Rupa Rural Municipality is expected to strengthen local agriculture, increase productivity, and provide sustainable livelihoods for the community.
