The Finance Minister appears to have overstepped the bound of his ministerial mandate, making remarks that risk distorting the very foundation of Nepal’s long standing principled foreign policy. Such an obsequious posture not only undermines the dignity of our sovereignty but also makes a mockery of the long standing relationship between Nepal and India that both countries have upheld in high esteem.
Nepal’s foreign policy has consistently been a matter of national sovereignty, dignity and enduring principles and must not be a matter of personal discretion or political expediency. No office holder should compromise on these foundations through statements or conditions that undermines Nepal’s standing internationally.
Nepal-India relationship has always been deeply rooted in geography, history, culture and people to people connections. Strengthening this relationship is both natural and necessary. These aspects of our relationship brings us together like no other two nations. Therefore as a citizen of this country I strongly believe we should welcome every sincere effort to build stronger relation with our prominent neighbors but at the same time we expect our representatives to exercise sound diplomatic judgment and communicate our national position with dignity and balance it deserves.
Nepal-India relationship is historically too significant and strategically important to be reduced to gestures of personal deference or remarks that invite public ridicule…
Our securely cemented relationship also comes with our own historical experience, including unresolved boundary question and economic dependencies. It’s particularly important that the government of the day communicate its position with clarity and consistency through established diplomatic channels, evidence and cordial dialogue rather than rhetoric and lip service.
Friendship with our neighbors and fidelity to our sovereignty are not competing objectives. They’re complimentary responsibilities. Nepal can be and is a dependable partner precisely because it’s an independent nation confident with it’s identity and clear about it’s national interest
