Kathmandu: Sri Lanka has provided USD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal in support of communities affected by the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi River.
The assistance comes in response to the heavy loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by the floods on August 26 in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and other affected districts.
In line with the commitment made by the Government of Sri Lanka, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Nepal Ruwanthi Delpitiya handed over the financial assistance of USD 1 million to the Government of Nepal on Wednesday. The support was pledged under the direction of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Ambassador Delpitiya formally handed over the financial contribution to Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu.
During the meeting, Ambassador Delpitiya conveyed the deep sympathy and solidarity of the Government and people of Sri Lanka with Nepal and expressed heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the disaster.
The financial assistance is intended to support the Government of Nepal’s ongoing humanitarian, relief and recovery efforts, as well as to assist communities affected by the floods and landslides.
The handover of the assistance further reflects the longstanding bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Sri Lanka said.
Reaffirming Sri Lanka’s solidarity with Nepal during this difficult time, the embassy said the Sri Lankan Government would continue to remain engaged with the Government of Nepal and explore appropriate avenues to support ongoing relief and recovery efforts.
