Kathmandu : From a time when mobile phones were considered a luxury to an era where high-speed internet and digital services are part of everyday life, Ncell’s 21-year journey reflects the remarkable transformation of Nepal’s telecommunications landscape.
Originally incorporated as ‘Mero Mobile’ in 2004, the company began commercial operations on September 17, 2005. Since then, Ncell has evolved from a basic mobile service provider into a major player in Nepal’s digital connectivity ecosystem, expanding access to modern communication technologies across the country.
When Ncell entered the market, mobile penetration in Nepal was still low and access to mobile services was limited. The arrival of a private-sector operator helped introduce greater competition and accelerated the expansion of telecommunications services, gradually making mobile connectivity more accessible to ordinary Nepalis.
From 3G in the Himalayas to Nationwide 4G
Ncell’s technological journey has been marked by a series of major milestones. In 2010, the company expanded 3G connectivity to the Everest region, while in 2017 it launched 4G services, opening the door to faster mobile internet for millions of users.
Today, Ncell says its 4G network has reached all 77 districts and more than 95 percent of Nepal’s population, supporting communication, education, business and access to digital services.
The company has also moved beyond traditional voice services by introducing technologies and services such as VoLTE and eSIM, while advancing the transition from older 3G technology toward modern 4G-based connectivity. Ncell says its 3G shutdown is part of the move toward improved data and voice services through 4G and VoLTE.
More Than a Telecom Company
Over the years, Ncell’s role has increasingly extended beyond connecting people through calls and messages. Mobile internet has become an important tool for accessing information, digital payments, online education, business services, entertainment and other digital opportunities.
The company has also expanded into broadband connectivity through solutions such as WireFree Plus, while exploring digital applications beyond smartphones.
Ncell’s contribution has also included economic and social dimensions. According to the company, it has contributed more than Rs. 300 billion in taxes and fees since its establishment and has invested more than Rs. 1.80 billion in CSR initiatives focused on areas including education, health and the environment.
Over the past two decades, Ncell has also described its broader role as supporting Nepal’s Digital Nepal vision and contributing to the country’s economic and infrastructure development.
A 21-Year Journey—and the Road Ahead
What began as ‘Mero Mobile’ in 2005 has grown into a much broader digital connectivity journey. For millions of Nepalis, the evolution of mobile technology has meant not only easier communication but also greater access to information, opportunities and an increasingly digital way of life.
As Ncell marks its 21st anniversary, its journey stands alongside Nepal’s own digital transformation—from limited mobile access to nationwide high-speed connectivity and an increasingly connected society.
From ‘Mero Mobile’ to a connected digital Nepal, Ncell’s 21-year journey is a story of how technology and connectivity have become part of everyday Nepali life.
